Rachel owns and manages Island Therapy Center, opening the clinic in 2009 after recognizing the need for additional therapy services on Sanibel.  Rachel grew up in England and Canada, graduating with her Physical Therapy (aka Physiotherapy) degree from Dalhousie University, Halifax, Nova Scotia in 1995.  Practicing in Florida since 1997, primarily in outpatient orthopedic, neurology and rehabilitation settings, Rachel specializes in vestibular rehabilitation/dizziness (Susan Herdman Certification), balance training, NDT, joint replacement, hand therapy, osteoporosis, Parkinson's, stroke and lymphedema (Vodder Certification).  Rachel has lectured to community groups on topics including osteoporosis, stroke, arthritis, fall/fracture prevention and back care/body mechanics.  Training in hands-on techniques in Canada and the USA, Rachel is also a skilled massage therapist.  A Sanibel resident since 2008, Rachel enjoys stand-up paddle-boarding, Pilates and cycling, and is a member of the APTA and Sanibel Captiva Rotary Club.

Need physical therapy for any orthopedic or neurological problem?  You are in great hands with Marva.  A Florida Native, Marva graduated from Florida International University in 1978 with a BS in Physical Therapy. She has spent time in Arizona and California, and later returned to Florida with her husband, Terry. While in California, Marva became interested in mind-body medicine and earned an MA in Counseling Psychology. Also in California she became interested in The Trager Approach®, a mind-body approach to movement and postural awareness. She became a Certified Trager Practitioner in 1999. The Trager philosophy has a great influence in her therapeutic practice. Marva became a Certified Lymphedema Therapist in 2010, effectively treating lymphedema, the chronic swelling that can occur as a result of cancer treatment. A skilled manual therapist, Marva completed a year-long manual therapy certification program with Ola Grimsby approach through the Florida Institute of Orthopedic Manual Physical Therapy.  Marva has also earned fitness training certifications from the International Sports Science Association and the Aquatic Exercise Association. Personally, Marva loves the outdoors and enjoys boating and diving. One of her favorite activities is paddle boarding with her dog Ilka. Marva and Terry also love hiking in Colorado and Arizona.  Marva is available for physical therapy, massage therapy and lymphedema therapy.











Paula Sedas, PT, DPT

Dr. Paula Sedas is a highly skilled and compassionate physical therapist with over 17 years of experience, originally from Colombia, South America.  She received her PT degree in 1998 from La Universidad del Valle, and then completed her Doctorate in Physical Therapy in 2014 at the University of South Florida.  In 2002, Paula relocated to Southwest Florida, where she has excelled as a physical therapist in a variety of settings.  Paula has a strong background and experience working with patients after orthopedic surgeries (including total knee and shoulder procedures), pain management and weakness/balance disorders.  Paula enjoys spending time with her husband and daughter, exercising and visiting her family in Colombia.  Paula is available for physical therapy sessions Tuesdays, Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays during winter season, and Tuesdays, Thursdays and Fridays during summer season.  Paula is also fluent in English and Spanish.








 





Sherri Bourdo, PT, DPT

Dr. Sherri Bourdo joins us during our high-season, and brings a wealth of knowledge, clinical skill and enthusiasm to Island Therapy Center.  Graduating in 2011 from Carroll University in Wisconsin with her Doctorate in Physical Therapy, Sherri is also an active member of the American Physical Therapy Association.  While Sherri has a strong background in orthopedic conditions and surgeries, she is also proficient in balance training/fall prevention, stroke rehabilitation and strength/conditioning.  Sherri enjoys spending time in the outdoors, paddleboarding, hiking and playing beach volleyball.  We are fortunate to have Sherri provide one-on-one sessions Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays during our winter months.

 
  

 
 
Laura Dasta, LMT

Laura Dasta is a licensed massage therapist and additionally a certified Reiki master.  Her massage therapy specialties include trigger point myofascial release, craniosacral therapy, Swedish massage, reflexology, cupping and deep tissue.  Laura's trigger point release techniques are great for relieving chronic and acute muscle pain, and her craniosacral therapy can quiet the nervous system and help reset the body's natural rhythm.  Laura is also skilled in the application of cupping, utilizing special suction cups to increase skin circulation and reduce myofascial tension for an intense deep tissue treatment.  Laura strongly believes in the emotional and spiritual connection to the body, and practices yoga on a daily basis.  Massage therapy is Laura's passion, and her desire is to help others achieve their highest level of well-being. 












Caroline Leon, LMT

Caroline is originally from Chicago, but has lived most of her life in Florida, including Sanibel.  She has enjoyed working as a massage therapist since 2003, after receiving her certification through the Florida Academy of Massage and Skin Care.  Caroline is also a graduate of the University of Florida, where she received a Bachelor of Arts degree.  From high-end spas to chiropractic offices, Caroline's belief in fitting the therapy to the client is of utmost importance.  Whether you are looking to relax the body and mind, or address muscle restrictions, rest assured your specific needs will be addresssed.  Caroline's specialties include therapeutic deep tissue, medical massage, relaxation/Swedish massage, pre-natal massage and reflexology.  Caroline is available for sessions Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays.








Melissa Williams, LMT

Melissa has studied and practiced massage therapy for over 20 years in Los Angeles, New York City and Florida, and hails from a long line of holistic healers, including her mother and grandparents.  She works with the body using therapeutic deep tissue massage, reflexology, Swedish massage and craniosacral therapy, customized to each individual.  Melissa was born in California and raised in Colorado, and is now settled in Southwest Florida.  Her favorite activities include Qi Gong, conscious eating and spending time in nature with her husband and daughter.  Melissa is available for massage therapy sessions on Thursdays.  










Mahnaz Bassiri, Certified Pilates Instructor, Certified Personal Trainer
Mahnaz has studied Pilates and certified with CORE Dynamics Pilates for Mat and Reformer, and enjoys teaching with a compassionate approach.  As a Certified Personal Trainer through the AMFPT, and Group Exercise Trainer through the AFAA, Mahnaz works with individuals with all levels of health and wellness goals.  She has lived in Florida for the past 10 years, and has a true passion for helping people to maintain a healthy lifestyle, and achieve their goals safely and efficiently.  








Toni Underwood, Business Office Manager/Billing Manager
Toni moved to Sanibel in 2008 with her husband and two young sons, and loves living on the Island.  Toni enjoys greeting and meeting new patients and visitors to the Island Therapy Center, and is always ready to help and ensure patient needs and schedules are managed efficiently.  Toni's cheerful and friendly personality, and attention to detail make her a valuable part of the Island Therapy Center team.  Toni is happy to answer any of your billing questions.  Navigating insurance policies and coverage can be challenging, but Toni can help you understand your physical therapy benefits and procedures for payment.
